Follow-up email after a networking conversation
After an informational interview, coffee chat, or referral introduction, a short thank-you keeps the relationship warm, and makes it natural to check back in later if a role opens up.

Subject: Thank you for your time
Hi [Name], Thank you again for taking the time to speak with me about [topic: their role, the team, the industry]. I found your perspective on [something specific they said] really helpful, and it's given me a clearer picture of what to focus on. I'll keep you posted on how my search progresses, and please don't hesitate to reach out if there's ever anything I can help with on my end. Thanks again, [Your name]
Tips
- Send within a day or two while the conversation is still fresh.
- Reference something specific they said. It's the difference between a real thank-you and a form letter.
- Don't ask for a referral in this email. Let the relationship breathe, then follow up in a few weeks if a relevant role opens.
- If they've since referred you or a role has opened, use the after-applying template instead, and mention the connection by name.
Followup's Contacts view keeps every recruiter, referral, and networking contact organized alongside the jobs they're linked to.
